Why is it important to wear a helmet?
A helmet protects your brain from injury!
Think about this:
Your brain has a texture similar to jello.
Imagine gently pushing your finger against jello. If the push is very gentle, the jello will bounce back into shape once you remove your finger. But, if you press into the jello harder, the surface of the jello may change shape or be damaged.
The same thing can happen with your brain.
A helmet helps to make sure that pressures on the brain stay gentle, not causing any major damage to the brain. If you fall from a bike, scooter, or skis, and you’re wearing a helmet, the helmet absorbs a lot of the force from that fall.
The helmet also protects your skull. The skull is the thick bone that surrounds your brain and protects it. You don’t want your skull getting fractured, and a helmet can prevent that from happening. Your helmet might get dented and need to be replaced - but that means there is less impact on your skull and your brain.
